Elazig, located in the upper Firat (Euphrate) region, is a Eastern Anatolian city and province. It's altitude is 1067 metres above sea level. A relatively new town, Elazig was established in the mid-19th century by Sultan Abdulaziz and named after him. Although little has been written about Elazig, it's region dates back to very early times. For this reason we have to include Harput's history since it is close to Elazig's. The history of Harput is perhaps most appropriately described as a mirror image of the complex, contradictory and often violent history of east-central Anatolia. The citadel was founded by the Urartus some hours after the dawn of time, and conquered successively by every army that passed from east to west or from north to south, including the Hurrites, Mitanis, Hittites, Egyptians, Achaemanids, Macedonians, Parthians, Armenians, Romans, Sassanians, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuk, Artuk, and Akkoyunlu and other sundry Turks. The Harput Castle which still remains today, keeps aspects of the Urartu period intact.
Climate
The city, where central continental climate prevailes, is surrounded by Keban and Karakaya dams and the natural beauty of lake Hazar. The city resembles a peninsula. These artificial and natural lakes have a considerable effect on the climate of the city. Important rivers such as Euphrates (Firat), Murat, Tigrus (Dicle) and Karasu run through the land of province which is overlayed by mountains and plains. Moreover, lake Hazar is in the province limits as well.
